With colleges all around the United States beginning their spring break periods, thousands of twenty-somethings are on the internet searching for a cheap spot to dig their tattooed, little feet in the sand. If you’re one of those twenty-somethings, look no further! Here’s 5 cool spots to spend your spring break this year.

5. South Padre Island

A resort town on a barrier island of the same name, South Padre Island is located off the southern coast of Texas. The island, normally know for it’s known for its beaches and calm waters, is home to only 3,000 residents. However, during spring break, South Padre swells to over 50,000 people. That’s a lot of spring breakers!

4. Puerto Rico

Looking to get away? Don’t have a passport? Puerto Rico is a great choice! Puerto Rico is a Caribbean island and unincorporated U.S. territory with a landscape of mountains, waterfalls and the El Yunque tropical rainforest. In San Juan, the capital and largest city, the Isla Verde area is known for its hotel strip, beach bars and casinos.

Did you know, Puerto Rico is Spanish for “Rich Port”?

3. Myrtle Beach

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is not a super popular destination for spring break mainly because the temperature in March tops at only 65 degrees, but there are other, indoor activities that make Myrtle Beach worthy of a visit. Ripley’s Aquarium, the Hollywood Wax Museum, andthe Horry County FunHouse are just a few examples.

2. Cancún

The Mexican city of Cancún sits on the Yucatán Peninsula bordering the Caribbean Sea. It’s known for its beaches, numerous resorts and nightlife. Cancún is composed of two distinct areas: El Centro the more traditional downtown area, and Zona Hotelera, a long, beachfront strip of high-rise hotels, nightclubs, shops and restaurants. Cancún is also a famed destination for students during universities’ spring break period.

1. Miami Beach

Last but not least, the one you’ve all been waiting for. The south Florida island city, connected by bridges to mainland Miami has wide beaches stretched from North Shore Open Space Park, past palm-lined Lummus Park to South Pointe Park. As the Youtube videos prove, it is as exciting as it is talked about, but you may feel a little cramped on the beach this year. Due to overcrowding and college kid rowdiness, the city spent over $30,000 on a hard-line law-and-order social media campaign targeting undergrads, convincing them to choose another vacation destination. Despite the aggressive marketing campaign, spring break crowd volume increased 33 percent this year, according to an email newsletter from Commissioner John Aleman.
