Flights seem to be expensive 365 days out of the year, especially when we’re planning on booking a flight. Have you ever wondered how you can get around those overpriced fares? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Here’s 6 ways to save on your next flight - hopefully these work for you!

1. Keep your searches top secret

Flight prices change constantly, and fares will even increase when you repeatedly search the same trip. Searching for your flights in an incognito or private browser will help prevent this. Make this a constant practice for you, you’ll never be tricked into booking flights quicker again.

2. Use the best flight search engines

There’s no use in checking every single airline for prices individually, but beware of certain flight search engines. All search engines have inflated flight costs as part of taking a cut from the airlines. Some search engines (e.g. Expedia) consistently inflate much higher than others. Next time you’re looking to book, try SkyScanner, CheapOair, or Google Flights.

3. Identify the cheapest day to fly out

There is no consistent truth to exactly which days are cheapest to fly. Most of the time it is cheaper to leave on a weekday, though this isn't always the case. Try searching for one-way flights instead of round trips, this could also help cut the costs for you.

4. Fly for free with points

The cheapest flight you can book is free, and the easiest way to do that is with points. You can either sign up for an airlines rewards card or, to protect your credit, you can always opt for airline mileage.

5. If you know when and where you're going, don't wait to book

Do you have friends and family telling you that airline tickets get cheaper as your departure date approaches? Don’t listen to them! Budget airlines typically offer low rates as a baseline price, and as these tickets sell, the remaining ones increase in cost. If you know when and where you're going, don't wait on an unknown sale. Usually,  your biggest savings come from booking far ahead when you can.

6. Check if it's cheaper to pay in other currencies

Before booking a flight, consider if the rate is cheaper if paid in another currency. Often budget airlines will make you pay in the currency of the country you're departing from, but this isn't always the case. If you do luck out with this, make sure you're using a credit card that is free of foreign-transaction fees!
